As Labor Day weekend approaches and kids all over the country are returning to school, ETMG is excited to provide an update regarding our contribution to the Sacred Heart Community Service agency’s most successful “Pack-a-Back Educational Campaign” in the 12 years since organizers first started the event. Every summer, Sacred Heart collects backpacks filled with necessary supplies for K-12 low-income students in the San Jose area. This year, Sacred Heart provided a record-setting 2,462 backpacks to community youth. ETMG contributed 250 (about 10%) of the new backpacks. As promised, after an initial contribution of 200 backpacks, ETMG donated an additional backpack for every new person who followed us on Twitter or Facebook during the campaign.
In early August, volunteers arrived at Sacred Heart to organize piles of supplies and backpacks into a system filed by grade level, and the National Charity League sent folks over to help decorate for the big day. On August 9, distribution day, one family with 3 children was standing in line at 5:00am even though the doors weren’t scheduled to open until 10:00am. Needless to say, they got the pick of the backpack litter. By the end of the day, all 2,462 backpacks, filled with necessary supplies, were paired with new owners. Thanks to our larger community, we were able to help equip hundreds of Bay area kids for the start of a new academic year. Now that’s what we call teamwork for the future.
